Precompiled binaries are available for common platforms. For source compilation, Rust 1.91+ is required.

## The `~x` Sigil
The `~x` sigil creates XPath expressions with optional modifiers:

## Usage
All parsing flows through a single optimized structural index. XPath and streaming are API features on top of that path, maintained for SweetXml compatibility.

## Saxy-Compatible API
RustyXML is a drop-in replacement for [Saxy](https://hex.pm/packages/saxy). SAX handler callbacks, `SimpleForm`, `Partial` incremental parsing, and XML encoding all work with the same API.

### Known Limitations
- **`id()`** — Not supported. Returns an error. RustyXML disables DTD processing for security (XXE prevention), and `id()` requires DTD-declared ID attributes to function.
- **`$variable`** — Variable references are not supported. Returns an error. Variables are primarily an XSLT feature; standalone XPath evaluation does not define a variable binding mechanism.
- **Namespace axis** — Returns empty. The namespace axis requires namespace node types not present in the node model. Use `namespace-uri()` for namespace information.

### Streaming
Stream large XML files with bounded memory. Returns `{tag_atom, xml_string}` tuples compatible with SweetXml.

**Key features:**
- Bounded memory regardless of file size
- Handles elements spanning chunk boundaries
- No hanging with `Stream.take` (fixes SweetXml issue #97)

## Architecture
A single `UnifiedScanner` tokenizes input with SIMD acceleration, dispatching to a `ScanHandler` trait that builds the structural index, SAX events, or streaming elements.

## Parsing Modes: Lenient vs Strict
### The Reality of XML in the Wild
In theory, XML is strictly defined by the W3C specification. In practice, many real-world XML documents contain minor well-formedness violations that strict parsers reject. This creates a tension between correctness and practicality.
**Common violations found in production XML:**
- Unquoted attribute values: `<div class=main>`
- Invalid element names: `<123-item>` (names can't start with digits)
- Comments with `--` inside: `<!-- TODO -- fix later -->`
- Control characters in content
### How Parsers Handle This

#### SweetXml/xmerl Behavior
SweetXml wraps Erlang's `:xmerl` parser, which is strictly compliant with no lenient mode. Per the xmerl documentation: *"Fatal errors must be detected by a conforming parser... This version of xmerl reports both categories of errors as fatal errors, most often resulting in an exit."*

This makes SweetXml unsuitable for processing untrusted or third-party XML without wrapping every call in `try/catch`. RustyXML's lenient mode handles this gracefully.
### RustyXML's Approach
RustyXML defaults to **strict mode** to match SweetXml behavior, while offering **lenient mode** for real-world XML that may have minor issues.

### XML Conformance
RustyXML is validated against the official [W3C XML Conformance Test Suite](https://www.w3.org/XML/Test/) (xmlconf) — the industry-standard suite with 2000+ test cases contributed by Sun, IBM, OASIS/NIST, and others. Each test encodes a specific clause of the XML 1.0 specification: malformed element names, entity boundary conditions, encoding declarations, comment syntax, CDATA nesting rules, and hundreds more edge cases.
**RustyXML passes 100% of applicable tests** — 1089/1089 in strict mode:

This is a from-scratch parser, not a wrapper around an existing C or Rust library. Achieving full conformance required implementing every well-formedness constraint in [XML 1.0 §2.1](https://www.w3.org/TR/xml/#sec-well-formed) and verifying each one against the official test suite individually.
Most alternative Rust XML crates (quick-xml, roxmltree) do not attempt full conformance or only pass a subset. SweetXml inherits conformance from Erlang's `:xmerl`, but xmerl is maintained by the OTP team — not built from the ground up.
Lenient mode still parses all 218 valid documents correctly but intentionally accepts malformed input instead of rejecting it.

## Security
RustyXML is designed to be **secure by default** against common XML vulnerabilities.
### XXE (XML External Entity) - IMMUNE
RustyXML **does not** process external entities. Attacks like this are completely ineffective:

External entity declarations are parsed but **ignored**. No file system access, no network requests.
### Billion Laughs (Entity Expansion Bomb) - IMMUNE
RustyXML **only expands** the 5 XML built-in entities:

Custom entity definitions in DTDs are **ignored**. This XML bomb has no effect:

### DTD Processing - Disabled
- External DTDs are **never** fetched
- Internal DTD subsets are **parsed but not processed**
- No entity definitions are honored (except built-ins)
### XPath Injection - Application Responsibility
If your application interpolates user input into XPath queries, sanitize it:

RustyXML is built with defense-in-depth for production reliability:

RustyXML replaces both libraries with no conflicts. SweetXml functions (`xpath/2`, `xmap/2`, `~x` sigil) and Saxy functions (`parse_string/4`, `parse_stream/4`, `encode!/2`) coexist at different arities.
